I recently acquired a bunch of antique tools from a friend. Among them was this old "Western" knife that was in very poor condition. I decided to clean it up a bit and make it usable again. It was rusty, crusty and covered in mold and needed some TLC. You can see where someone attempted to "sharpen" the blade using a grinder and slipped, gouging the steel.
As you can see, this knife has lots of rust on the tang under the leather. Not only that, but the blade is bent as well.
I cleaned some of the rust off of the tang and removed a layer of the old nasty, moldy leather. I sanded up to about 600 on the handle.
Here it is cleaned up and sharpened.
